3 Ways Massachusetts Residents Can Save Energy (and Money) All Year Long!

3 Ways Massachusetts Residents Can Save Energy (and Money) All Year Long!

The winter and summer months are both associated with high home energy costs. Our homes do their best to provide consistent protection when winter temperatures plunge or summer temperatures soar, but as homeowners and renters, we all have an interest in achieving energy efficiency—and saving money.

If you are looking to improve your home's energy efficiency, there is no cost for an assessment with HomeWorks Energy (a Mass Save partner). You can schedule an appointment online or call (781) 528-0822 to schedule over the phone. Don’t forget to mention our referral code “KMB*.”

Here are three ways you may be able to save energy and money.

1. Upgrade Your Insulation

According to ENERGY STAR, 9 out of 10 U.S. homes are under-insulated. That means that 90% of homes are facing every season underprepared for the extreme temperatures, winds, and storms that Mother Nature brings us. If your insulation is outdated, it can’t provide an adequate barrier of protection.

Fortunately, there are attractive financial incentives available to Massachusetts residents that can reduce the cost of installing new insulation anywhere from 75% to 100%. For example, the Mass Save® program offers the HEAT Loan, which offers up to $25,000 for up to 7 years for home energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation.

Don’t forget that insulation is just as important in the summer. Insulation stops heat transfer both ways—it keeps the heat in during the winter and out in the summer.

2. Seal Your Home’s Air Leaks

Do you know what pairs well with insulation? You guessed it—air sealing!

Air leaks are among the greatest sources of energy loss in a home, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). You wouldn’t leave your door open all winter long, would you? Well, that’s what it’s like when your home’s air sealing isn’t up to today’s standards. Air can leak uncontrollably through windows, doors, outlets, and more, which wastes energy and money.  ENERGY STAR says that with updated insulation and air sealing, you can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs—or 11% of total home energy costs.

Currently, the Mass Save program is offering 100% off the cost of home air sealing. That’s just one of the benefits we all earn because as Massachusetts residents, we help fund the Mass Save program through an energy efficiency charge on our monthly energy bills.

3. Heat and Cool With Electricity

Beginning in January of 2022, Mass Save started offering up to $10,000 in rebates for residential heat pump installations.

A heat pump (also called a ductless mini-split or mini-split heat pump) is an all-electric way to heat and cool your home. It collects the heat in your home and pushes it outside during the summer to keep you cool. During the winter, it generates heat and pushes it into your home to keep you warm. Heat pumps work with or without ducts, can be customized to fit your home, and can be effective in extreme temperatures. They are one of the most energy-efficient ways on the market to heat and cool your home.

Access Mass Save Rebates

Making your home more energy efficient is a smart choice but doing that with available rebates and incentives is even smarter!

To access insulation discounts, no-cost air sealing, heat pump rebates, and the 0% financing HEAT Loan, all you have to do is sign up for a Home Energy Assessment. It’s another benefit in itself because you get to learn how your home consumes and loses energy with a Home Energy Specialist. You’ll even receive no-cost items like programmable thermostats, water-saving devices, and advanced power strips—just for participating!
