Sudbury River Cleanup
Where: The stretch of Sudbury River between the Frederick P Stearns Reservoir dam
and 26 Auburn St Ext (near River’s Edge Garden Center). The ultimate goal is to arrive
at 26 Auburn St Ext to unload trash from boats at 1 pm, so feel free to start any place
you feel comfortable along the river. Most kayakers & boaters will start at 10am, 100
yds downstream of the Frederick P Stearns Reservoir dam. There’s parking for a
handful of cars at the aqueduct pump house (adjacent to 312 Winter St). It will be a
leisurely float with frequent stops to pick up trash along the 1.4 mile stretch of river to
get to the final destination at 26 Auburn Street Extension.
What to bring: You are responsible for bringing all your own gear. All small boats are
welcome, especially kayaks, SUPs, and canoes, though we don’t recommend
inflatables because of the risk of puncture when loading trash. Depending on the
weather and water temperature, you may wish to use water shoes, a bathing suit,
waders, or other gear to stay comfortable if you get out of your boat while gathering
trash. There will likely be one or more sections on the river that require getting out of
your kayak or canoe to navigate over or around logs in the river. Personal flotation
devices (type 1) are recommended. Additional suggested gear includes: sunscreen,
bug spray, work gloves, trash picker/grabber/reacher stick, a water bottle, snacks, and
a dry bag on a tether or carabiner so you don’t lose any valuables in the river.
Transportation: After unloading all the trash from boats at 1 pm, boaters certainly have
the option of paddling back to their starting point. Alternatively, volunteers will likely be
available to shuttle folks back to their vehicles parked upstream too.
Please email Joshua.M.Street@gmail.com if interested in joining the river
cleanup, and please include whether you may appreciate a shuttle back to your car
parked upriver (or if you’re willing to help drive any volunteers back to their cars
upriver).
Note: The rain date is Sunday, August 18.
